CEN Workshop on Learning Technologies
The CEN Workshop on 'Learning Technologies' (CEN WS-LT) has produced some documents relative to the internationalization of several specifications:

  • Internationalisation of the IEEE LTSC Learning Object Metadata (LOM) specification. The project team has developed a CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA) on the internationalization of the IEEE LTSC Learning Object Metadata (LOM) specification. The CWA will take into account European specificities and requirements. The CWA has been endorsed by the Workshop. CWA 14643: 2003 Internationalisation of the IEEE Learning Object Metadata

  • Interoperability frameworks for exchange of information between diverse management systems. The project team has a main objectives:

    1. Study and analyze the SIF (Schools Interoperability Framework) specifications

    2. Analyze how this specification can be adapted to an European context assuring that:
      • It does not duplicate other international standardization activities
      • It suits e-Europe standardization
      • It is appropriate for a wider audience

IEEE LTSC
The IEEE P1484.9 Localization Working Group considered localization issues for learning technologies. This includes facilitating human language translations (for instance of learning documents or learning object metadata vocabularies), but also more technical issues (for instance character sets and encodings), as well as more general cultural issues (for instance appropriate icon representations or user interface metaphors).
Purpose
The purpose was to support the global applicability and understanding of learning technology, so that its appropriate uptake is promoted. The final end users, i.e. the learners, will benefit from this work, as they will be confronted with less inappropriately biased materials. This is especially relevant in the culturally extremely sensitive area of education.
