Math-Bridge is an innovative and adaptive web-based environment for learning mathematics. The system guides the student in self-regulated learning, can adapt to individual knowledge state and personal interests and learning goals, and allows the learner to realize their learning potential. Many college and university students in Europe do not have the appropriate mathematics competencies necessary for their studies. For engineering and science studies this is particularly problematic. For instance, engineering studies at German universities and colleges have a drop-out rate of 25%-35%. Science studies at German universities and colleges have a drop-out rate of 15%-40%.Math-Bridge aims at changing this situation to the better and helps to bridge the gap between schools and higher education in Europe. It will provide multi-lingual and multi-cultural semantic access (e.g. search and course generation) to remedial mathematics content, which adapts to the requirements of a learner and his/her subject of study. It will bring together content from different European sources and offer it in a unified way. This access will be provided through a sustainable Pan-European learning service for remedial mathematics, which is built by collecting appropriate learning resources, extending them in terms of structure and multi-linguality, and making them useful and easy-to-find. The extended formats of the content will make a wide use of standards and, hence, will make this content re-usable and “transferable” between different learning environments.In order to achieve its goals Math-Bridge will study the target competencies required for fields-of-study, adapt existing semantic and multi-lingual search software, tailor assessment tools and methodologies, and adjust the cutting-edge ActiveMath learning environment to the remedy-scenario which includes specific diagnostic means and decisions for the transition from school to higher education.
Moreover, Math-Bridge will enable collaborative authoring of the content on the basis of Creative Commons’ licenses and improve instrumental support to collaborative authoring. This will stimulate collaborative production and assembly of educational content, which, we believe, is a future must. The results will be usable way beyond mathematics.
Math-Bridge has the following objectives:- Broad web-accessibility of mathematics remedial learning content
- Cross-cultural and multi-lingual web-accessibility and use of mathematics remedial learning content
- Use and reuse of content and interoperability through enrichment of content and customization of technology
- Use of open standards (LOM, IMS MathsQTI, OpenMath, OMDoc) in the content enrichment and SCORM for exercises and reporting; communication standards and open APIs for the integration of software and, where possible, integration via service-architecture.
- Personalized math remedy accessible across Europe

Math-Bridge will make quality content available that is used and re-used mixing both professionally and user-generated content. The content's interoperability is based on the semantic level of the encoding. The content will be made considerably more accessible and reusable thanks to a fine grained slicing and tagging, an AI-supported flexible assembly of content, a semantic-powered search engine, a cross-cultural presentation, a user-based quality rating, and the reliance upon open standards.
Educational remedy scenario roughly, the educational scenarios to be covered include (1) remedial courses at colleges and universities for first year students or for students before enrolment. Such courses are held at many European higher education institutions, and students can use the personalized remedy in order to obtain information and practice exercises and close existing competency-gaps. Courses can also be used for self-assessment which is also very important, given that students may wrongly estimate their capabilities with their future study subject. Tutors can assemble special courses with dynamic places for the group of students. The online (personalized) remedy will also be employed by students without tutor guidance during their choice and preparation for college/university studies. In this situation, the explicit provision of target competencies for a study subject at a particular university can help students to tailor the remedy. |
