ISO/IEC JTC1
The purpose of the work of the ISO/IEC JTC1 WG1 is to define core definitions and associated terms used in information technology applications for learning, education, and training. It presents selected definitions and associated terms, which denote concepts relevant to this field, focusing on the terms necessary for standards development.

In document SC36 N0051, there was a proposal to focus the work of WG1 to concentrate on, “The development of a quality and harmonized SC36 Vocabulary” and “SC36 in general, and through SC36/WG1 in particular, maintain content and maintenance control of all definitions and terms which are to form part of the SC36 Vocabulary”. Over the intervening time, the focus shifted from the overall management of this harmonized vocabulary to developing an electronic registry of terms and definitions. In the March 2007 London SC36 Plenary, this focus was changed back with the cessation of work on the registry projects.

ISO 2382
ISO 2382 was initially based mainly on the usage to be found in the Vocabulary of Information Processing which was established and published by the International Federation for Information Processing and the International Computation Centre, and in the American National Dictionary for Information Processing Systems and its earlier editions published by the American National Standards Institute (formerly known as the American Standards Association). Published and Draft International Standards relating to information technology of other international organizations (such as the International Telecommunication Union and the International Electrotechnical Commission) as well as published and draft national standards have also been considered.

The purpose of ISO/IEC 2382 is to provide definitions that are rigorous, uncomplicated and which can be understood by all concerned. The scope of each concept defined has been chosen to provide a definition that is suitable for general application. In those circumstances where a restricted application is concerned, the definition may need to be more specific.

Within current practice, diverse terms are commonly used in spite of the fact that no precise definitions are agreed upon. Definitions of terms of this kind are highly dependent on the context in which these terms are used and in such cases a spectrum of definitions will be provided instead of a rigorous and uncomplicated definition.
Part 36
This part of ISO/IEC 2382 is intended to facilitate international communication in information technology for learning, education and training. It presents, in two languages, terms and definitions of selected concepts relevant to this field and identifies relationships among the entries.

The main interested bodies that might benefit from the proposed standard are:
  • producers of standards in the field of information technology for learning, education, and training;
  • producers of tools, products, and services for learning, training and educational management;
  • agencies offering services in this field;
  • purchasers and users of the products (educators, tutors and learners).

Standardized terminology will facilitate mutual understanding and communication in IT for LET. In particular, the use of a standard in the description of products will promote their use across the world and facilitate informed choice of product characteristics by consumers.
