The IMS Learning Resource Metadata specification is composed by three different parts:
- IMS Learning Resource Meta-Data Information Model. It describes the names, definitions, organization, and constraints of the IMS Meta-Data elements. Currently, the IEEE 1484.12.1 - 2002 Standard for Learning Object Metadata is used as the IMS Learning Resource Meta-data Specification.
- IMS Learning Resource Meta-Data XML Binding. It provides a XML representation and XML control files (DTD, XSD) to assist developers with their meta-data implementations. Currenly, the IEEE 1484.12.3 Standard for Extensible Markup Language (XML) Schema Definition Language Binding for Learning Object Metadata is used as the IMS Learning Resource Meta-data XML Binding Specification.
- IMS Learning Resource Meta-Data Best Practice and Implementation Guide. It provides general guidance about how an application may use LOM meta-data elements.

None of the IEEE or IMS documents address details of meta-data implementation, such as its architecture, programming language, and data storage approach.
