IMS Global Learning Consortium
Learner Information is a collection of information about a Learner (individual or group learners) or a Producer of learning content (creators, providers or vendors). The IMS Learner Information Package (IMS LIP) specification addresses the interoperability of internet-based Learner Information systems with other systems that support the Internet learning environment.

This specification is being developed by the IMS Global Consortium (http://www.imsglobal.org).
Purpose
The intent of the specification is to define a set of packages that can be used to import data into and extract data from an IMS compliant Learner Information server. A Learner Information server may exchange data with Learner Delivery systems or with other Learner Information servers. It is the responsibility of the Learner Information server to allow the owner of the learner information to define what part of the learner information can be shared with other systems. The core structures of the IMS LIP are based upon: accessibilities; activities; affiliations; competencies; goals; identifications; interests; qualifications, certifications and licences; relationship; security keys; and transcripts.

The IMS LIP specification describes data structures, XML binding and accompanying best practices that are used for the formatting, storage, and exchange of learner information. The specification supports the exchange of learner information among learning management systems, human resource systems, student information systems, enterprise e-learning systems, knowledge management systems, resume repositories, and other systems used in the learning process. In the specification, such systems are called learner information systems regardless of any other functionality they possess or roles they fulfil.

IMS LIP is a structured information model. The model defines fields into which the data can be placed and the type of data may be put into this fields. Typical data might be the name of the learner, a course or training complete, a learning objective, a preference of a particular type of technology, and so on.

The Learner Information is separated into eleven main categories (as shown in the figure). These structures have been identified as the primary data structures that are required to support learner information. This composite approach means that only the required information needs to be packaged and stored.

The IMS Learner Information Package (LIP) core data structures
Core data structures (or categories) of IMS LIP:
  • Identification: Biographic and demographic data relevant to learning;
  • Goal: Learning, career and other objectives and aspirations;
  • Qualifications, Certifications and Licenses (qcl): Qualifications, certifications and licenses granted by recognized authorities;
  • Activity: Any learning-related activity in any state of completion. Could be self-reported. Includes formal and informal education, training, work experience, and military or civic service;
  • Transcript: A record that is used to provide an institutionally-based summary of academic achievement. The structure of this record can take many forms;
  • Interest: Information describing hobbies and recreational activities;
  • Competency: Skills, knowledge, and abilities acquired in the cognitive, affective, and/or psychomotor domains;
  • Affiliation: Membership of professional organizations, etc. Membership of groups is covered by the IMS Enterprise specification;
  • Accessibility: General accessibility to the learner information as defined through language capabilities, disabilities, eligibilities and learning preferences including cognitive preferences (e.g. issues of learning style), physical preferences (e.g. a preference for large print), and technological preferences (e.g. a preference for a particular computer platform);
  • Securitykey: The set of passwords and security keys assigned to the learner for transactions with learner information systems and services;
  • Relationship: The set of relationships between the core components. The core structures do not have within them identifiers that link to the core structures. Instead all of these relationships are captured in a single core structure thereby making the links simpler to identify and manage.
These categories were chosen to meet the requirements of a large variety of use cases and to facilitate mapping among IMS and other relevant specifications. Within each category several data elements and structures are defined. Some of these are specified explicitly as data types (language strings, for the most part) and others are defined as recursive hierarchical structures. In addition, data may be defined by referencing mechanisms. The referencing mechanisms supported are internal references, references to an external learner information system, and references via a URI.

General Information
Title: “IMS Learner Information Package (IMS LIP)”
Version: 1.01
Release Date: 4 January 2005
Status: Final Specification
Authors: Colin Smythe

Learner Information Package v1.0.1 is a maintenance release of the Learner Information Package v1.0 Specification. This version just includes several typographical and elaborative changes made to clarify and correct the supporting documents (XML Schemas and examples).
LIP v1.0.1 is comprised of the three base documents from the LIP v1.0 specification (see "Previous version") and an additional document describing amendments to be made by adopters of the LIP v1.0 specification:
  • IMS Learner Information Package Summary of Changes (1.0.1). This document describes amendments to be made by adopters of the LIP v1.0 specification, thereby creating the LIP v1.0.1 specification (HTML)
IMS XML Schema and Examples are also available in the IMS LIP Web site.
Tracking of changes
The substantive differences between the v1.0 and the v1.0.1 specifications are limited to:
  • Updating the XML schema to use formally recommended XML Schema definitions;
  • Correcting typographical errors in the binding of the >learningactivityref> element in the Binding document;
  • <address> <street> Setting cardinality to O in the Binding in line with the Information Model;
  • <affiliation> <date> Setting cardinality to O n in the Binding in line with the Information Model;
  • <demographics> <date> Setting cardinality to O in the Binding in line with the Information Model;
  • <formname> <text> Setting cardinality to M in the Binding in line with the Information Model;
  • <goal><status> Setting cardinality to O in the Binding in line with the Information Model;
  • <qcl><title> Setting cardinality to M in the Binding in line with the Information Model;
  • <qcl><date> Setting cardinality to M n in the Binding in line with the Information Model;
  • <representation> <date> Setting cardinality to M n in the Binding in line with the Information Model;
  • <description><full> Setting cardinality to O in the Binding in line with the Information Model;
  • <description><long> Setting cardinality to O in the Binding in line with the Information Model;
  • Clarification for use of the <sourcedid> element;
  • Bringing XSD in line with the DTD.

IMS LIP specification is intended to be consistent with these other IMS initiatives:
  • IMS Meta-data Specification. The IMS LIP specification recommends the usage, where appropriate, of the IMS Meta-data definitions to support the meta-data entities to be used in the context of the LIP.
  • IMS Content Packaging Specification. Multiple IMS LIP XML instances should be packaged using the IMS Content Packaging mechanisms.
  • IMS Question & Test Interoperability. Summary results interoperability is supported by the IMS LIP. This will also be addressed by the IMS QTI working-group.
In addition relations can be stablished with:
  • IMS Enterprise
  • LTSC PAPI
  • VCard

For the handling of an IMS LIP instance the conformance statement shall:
  • Indicate that all of the mandatory information model elements are correctly formed and located within the instance;
  • Indicate that all of the optional information model elements are correctly formed and located when relevant to the instance;
  • Indicate where the extension facilities made available within the LIP have been used and/or required.
