Overview
Several e-learning standards organizations have developed and documented their own best practices for using web services (e.g., SOAP, WSDL) in the e-learning space. These best practices are then used within each organization's e-learning standards, providing a common web services approach within the work of that organization.
Many of these web services best practices are variants and profiles of the WS-I recommendations (using specific versions of the underlying web services [WS*] specifications). But the different e-learning standards organizations have their own best practices and may use different versions and profiles of WS-I or the underlying specifications. The lack of a consistent approach increases complexity for developers and vendors; many vendors build products that integrate multiple e-learning standards and thus need to integrate web services built upon different underlying technologies.
The objective of this meeting is to bring key e-learning standards organizations together to discuss their approaches to profiling WS* bindings of web services in the learning and training domain, and to try to reach consensus on a common set of core practices (REST bindings are out of scope for this discussion). Preliminary discussions indicate significant overlap in existing solutions, requirements and a desire to consolidate where possible.
